Έλλην
The Modern Greek word denoting a Greek man is Έλληνας. Τhe archaic version, Έλλην, is used here sarcastically.
τι φταίω
The full phrase is «Για τι φταίω;» – literally: ‘What am I to blame for?’. On most informal situations, it is shortened to «Τι φταίω;».
έστω
Originally, έστω was the third-person imperative of the verb ‘to be’. Essentially, this is a command ordering that something exist. Nowadays, it is mainly used in the three following ways:
1. Introducing an imaginary scenario.
Έστω ότι ερχόμαστε. Μετά τι; – Supposing we do come. Then what?
Έστω χ > 0. – Let x > 0.
2. Saying ‘at least’ or ‘even’, often somewhat wistfully.
Θέλω να σε δω έστω για λίγο. – I want to see you even / at least for a bit.
3. Defending one’s argument, after it has suffered a blow.
- Έχουμε χρόνο. Τρεις μέρες. – We have enough time. Three days.
- Βασικά… μόνο δύο. – Basically… just two.
- Έστω. – Yeah fine, still.
μάγους
In the story of the birth of Jesus, the three men who visited the manger are known in English as ‘the three wise men’ or ‘the three kings’. In Greek, they are called «οι τρεις μάγοι», literally, ‘the three mages’.
αλλάξουμε
Normally, the verb ‘to exchange’ is ανταλλάσσω, which is a compound of αντί + αλλάσσω – the original version of Modern Greek αλλάζω. On some occasions, everyday language simply features αλλάζω instead.
